Support for Caregivers

Caring for elderly patients with Alzheimer's or dementia can be exhausting, both physically and mentally. Often, caregivers take on more than they can handle and end up resenting their patients or neglecting important areas of their lives.

If you are caring for someone with dementia, consider joining a support group. These groups can allow you to vent your thoughts, feelings and concerns to others who are dealing with similar situations. Support groups can connect you to others and will show you that you are not alone.

In addition, you might want to seek additional help. Hiring an in-home nurse for a couple of days a week or even for a couple of hours a week can provide you with a much-needed break.

As a caregiver I can say that there are those moments when I just want to throw up my hands and quit. I have two patients. One is my husband and the other my step dad. I promised my Mom before she died that I would take care of my step-dad. For nine years I cared for my father in law from 1986 to 1995. Then two years ago I had my Mom. Now two more. Seems like I have been a caregiver all my life and I really look forward to getting away. Just so you know, and I am guilty of this, take time for yourself as a caregiver. Your patients are only thinking of themselves. Rarely do they consider you as a person. You are just the person that does everything. Thanks for listening.

My husband suffers from FTD. I have found a wonderful online support group that you may not be aware of. It has been a lifeline for me. We have sufferers and caregivers, parents and children, all ages, from all over the world. I don't know how I would have managed caring for my loved one this long without this group. Please check us out and perhaps add us to your list of resources. http://www.ftdsupportforum.com/ http://www.ftdsupport.com.
